Csikorogva fordul a zárban a kulcs, s az öreg, szúrágta ajtó fájdalmas sóhajjal, lomhán tárul fel. Nehéz szívvel lép a konyhába a deák, lelkébe emlékek tolulnak, gyermekkora színes képei. Pókok fonják lenge hálóikat a spejz, s a fürdő sarkaiban, s méla csend dereng a három tágas szoba hófehér falán. A falak most is szárazak, mint egykor, nem lepi doh, penész. Hogyan is lephetné – mereng a deák – hiszen apja rakta egykor a ház falát, beton alapra vályogból téglát ő vetett. Visongó gyerekhad nyargalt körötte seprűnyél paripán. Vastag, erős falak, mik künn rekeszték a nyár tikkasztó hevét, s zord téli estéken őrizték a kályhák meghitt melegét. Amott a tágas konyha, melynek szegletében anyja befőttet, s lekvárt tett el egykor télire. Bágyadt őszi alkonyon bogrács alatt lobogott a láng, s maszatos kölykök nyalták gyümölcsök édes nedveit. Szú rág már a kamra ódon ajtaján, hova takarmányt hordtak hajdan a férfiak aratás után. Annak megette az ódon falak istállót és ólakat rejtenek, ló, s tehén lakott ezekben, disznó, kacsa, csibe amott, számtalan lábasjószág. Az udvaron túl már a kert, a porta 1.474 nm-én, hol megfáradt öregasszony hajlott alakja dereng. Anyját látja könnyes pilláin át, napégette arcát, aszott kezét. A rózsatő – melyet még anyja ültetett – most újra virágzik. A bíborszínű szirmokra az alkonyi napsugarak gyengéd csókot hintenek.
